How SafetyScore Works
SafetyScore makes workplace safety data accessible to everyone. We take publicly available OSHA inspection and violation data and turn it into easy-to-understand safety grades for any employer in America.
📊 Our Data Source
All data comes directly from the U.S. Department of Labor'sEnforcement Data Portal. This includes:
- Every OSHA inspection since 1973
- Detailed violation records with severity classifications
- Penalty amounts (initial and final)
- Accident and fatality data
We update our database daily to ensure you have the most current information.
🧮 SafetyScore Algorithm
Every company starts with a base score of 100. Points are deducted based on:
Serious violation-5 points
Willful violation-15 points
Repeat violation-10 points
Per $10,000 in fines-2 points
Per fatality-25 points
Time decay: Violations older than 5 years count at 50% weight.
Industry adjustment: Final grades compare scores to the industry median, so a warehouse company is compared to other warehouses, not tech offices.

⚠️ Limitations
- Only inspected companies: OSHA doesn't inspect every workplace. A company with no record might just mean they haven't been inspected yet.
- Name matching: Companies may appear under different names (e.g., "Amazon" vs "Amazon.com Services LLC"). We do our best to consolidate.
- State vs Federal: Some states run their own OSHA programs. Coverage may vary.
- Not legal advice: This tool is for informational purposes only. Always do your own research.
